Erma ‘Susie’ Dustin
Erma “Susie” Dustin, 93, Minot, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Trinity Hospital in Minot. Although her given name was Erma, for most of her life she was known by family and friends as “Susie.”
Erma B. Knorr was born Oct. 19, 1919, the daughter of Richard and Marie (Francois) Knorr, on the family homestead south of Makoti. She was raised and educated in the Makoti area.
On June 20, 1943, she was united in marriage to Walter Dustin in Ryder. They made their home on the Dustin farm southwest of Minot until 1995, when they moved into Minot. They continued to spend time on the farm during the summer months.
Following Walter’s death in 1998, Susie lived in Minot during winter months at Milton Young Towers while spending summers on the farm. She entered Trinity Homes in Minot in July 2010.
Throughout the years, Susie devoted her energies to home and family. Each year she raised a large vegetable garden and canned fresh fruit and vegetables. She also had a diverse, colorful flower garden that was enjoyed by visitors and lucky recipients of her bouquets. Her garden was assembled over a 60-year time frame from shoots and seedlings shared by friends and neighbors. She, in turn, shared starts with others so the seeds of her labors were enjoyed by many.
For several years, Susie was involved in the Drady Victory 4-H Club, which she enjoyed just as much as the girls. During quiet times, she enjoyed embroidery and left behind many heirloom pieces for her family to treasure.
Erma is survived by: son, Dale Dustin, Minot; daughter, Corlee (Cori) Esselman, Minot; son-in-law, Dennis Esselman, Colorado Springs, Colo.; nieces, Eloise Pellenwessel, Minot, and Sandra Ford, of Eugene, Ore.; nephews, Gordon Lind, Portland, Ore., and Theodore Dustin, St. Cloud, Minn.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; brother, Henry Knorr; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Knorr; sister, Esther Lind, and brother-in-law, Gunnar Lind.
