Norbert Schlichting

Norbert Schlichting, 84, Garrison, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, in a hospital in Bismarck.

Norbert Schlichting was born May 30, 1928, in Garrison, a son of Edith (Behles) and John Schlichting. He attended school in Garrison.

He married ArDella Meisch on Nov. 28, 1950, in Garrison at St. Nicholas Church. They were married for 47 years and had three daughters, Terriene, Peggy and Jodie.

He served in the Korean War as a medical technician from 1951 until 1957 when he was honorably discharged. After his service in the military he worked construction, beginning at Garrison Dam and followed the construction crew into the states of South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky. In 1970, they returned to Garrison where he worked on the Snake Creek Pumping Plant.

Norb and ArDella purchased the Dairy Queen in 1970. At that time it was a seasonal drive-up business. In 1974, they remodeled the Dairy Queen to a full menu sit-down restaurant. It was not uncommon to see Norb behind the grill or at the “coffee table” visiting with customers. After several attempts, they were finally able to retire in March 1997. Unfortunately, they were not able to go traveling together in retirement; ArDella passed away in July 1997.

Norb was an avid golfer and a member of the Garrison Golf Club, spending many hours in the development of the current course with many of his golfing buddies, especially Harold Rensch. After the passing of his wife, Norb and his daughters went on annual golf trips. What started out as a weekend golf outing turned into a weeklong adventure over several years. They golfed most of the courses in North Dakota and several in Minnesota. It was not uncommon to see Norb at the golf course with Scooter, his dog, who had been with him for 16 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Peggy (Alan) Huettl and Jodie (Tom) Bjornholt, both of Garrison; four grandchildren, Robert Huettl, Nicole (Joe) Hushka, Brandee (Jeff) Rensch and Ashley (Chris) Larson; great-grandchildren, Addison and Noah Hushka, Isaac, Ellie and Lucas Rensch, Katelin Walter and Keely Bjornholt; a sister, Laverne Miller, Yakima, Wash.; brothers, Richard (Betty) of Garrison, John (Carolyn) of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and George (Bernice) Schlichting of Garrison.

He was preceded in death by his wife, ArDella; daughter, Terriene; and parents, John and Edith.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison.

Burial will be at the St. Nicholas Cemetery in Garrison.
