Dance features parents

Parents of Minot High School varsity dance team members are willing to take big risks to help raise money for the dance team.

Team members Ashley Backes and Elizabeth Foisy said that parents of the team members have agreed to do a hip-hop dance with their daughters at the annual home show, which will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Minot State University Dome. Admission is $5 for adults; $4 for children and students. Children ages 5 and under will be admitted for free.

“I think they get one practice,” said Backes, a senior at Minot High School-Magic City Campus.

Few of the dancers’ parents are dancers themselves, the girls said, which should make the performance fun for the audience.

The home show is a fundraiser for the program and will include performances by the Minot High varsity team, the junior varsity and middle school dance teams, as well as teams from Underwood, Center-Stanton and Garrison.

Backes and Foisy said the girls on the team will perform a pom dance, a jazz dance and a kick dance.

“We have a really awesome hip hop dance,” said Backes, which will be “glow in the dark.”

The dance team is a busy group. They competed in Minnesota last weekend and will compete at the state competition this coming weekend.

The varsity team is coached by Lori Lawson and KaDee Simensen.
