George Bruner, 95, of Drake, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.
George Bruner, son of John and Elizabeth (Gange) Bruner, was born July 26, 1917, at rural Drake, the seventh child of twelve.
He began farming with his father at a young age and continued until answering the call to serve his country. He entered the United States Army in April 1942 and served with the First Cavalry in the South Pacific. George was classified as a sharpshooter with a carbine. He saw action at the Bismarck Archipelago Campaign in New Guinea and the Battle of Luzon in the Philippines. Following his honorable discharge on Nov. 30, 1945, he returned to the Bruner homestead and farmed with his brother, Martin.
On Oct. 1, 1952, George was married to Betty Feller at Karlsruhe. They made their home on the Bruner homestead until 1979, when they retired from farming and moved into Drake. George had been a resident of the St. Aloisius Nursing Home since May of 2011.
George was a life member of the David D. Nehrenberg American Legion Post # 32 of Drake and the Oswald-Wohl V.F.W. Post # 6831 of Anamoose. He was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5856 of Drake.
Those who shared in George’s life were: his wife, Betty; 2 daughters, Valerie (John) Holler, of Drake, and Kathy (Dave) Duchsherer, of Bismarck; 4 grandchildren, Troy (Michelle) Schilling, of Ellendale, Trent (Tina) Schilling, of East Bethel, Minn., Rebecca Holler, of Minot and David Holler, of Drake; 4 Schilling great-grandsons, Michael, Matthew, Liam and Collin; 2 sisters, Agnes Keller, of Albany, Ore., and Katherine Mack, of Hermiston, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elizabeth; and eight brothers, John, Frank, Bennie, Tony, Mike, Andrew, Martin and Charles.
Funeral: Will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Drake.
Burial: Church cemetery.
Visitation: Will be held Monday, Jan. 21, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home in Drake.
Prayer service: Will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at the church.
