Jury narrows in murder trial

Jury selection had already started to wind down ahead of schedule in the trial of Omar Moham-ed Kal-mio, 28, Thursday morning at the Ward County Courthouse.

Kalmio is being tried on suspicion of the Jan. 28, 2011, murders of Sabrina Zephier, 19, Jolene Zephier, 38, Dylan Zephier, 13, and Jeremy Longie, 22. Each charge is a class AA felony.

On Wednesday two jury panels of roughly 30 people each were questioned and interviewed, with two more expected to appear Thursday. Apparently counsel had found enough satisfactory potential jurors in the first two panels to begin striking them from the lists.

No panels and only two new potential jurors were interviewed Thursday because they had been unable to attend their assigned “Green” panel session Wednesday afternoon.

The jury pool is expected to be cut down to the final 16 people today, with 12 jurors and four alternates ready to hear opening arguments as the trial, jury intact, continues on Monday.
