Mary G. Wenker, age 96, of Crosby, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Crosby.
Mary was born on Jan. 18, 1917, the daughter of Wendell and Bessie (Lorimer) Lawrence. She lived all her life in Crosby and graduated from Crosby High School in 1935. She worked as a Bell Telephone operator, bookkeeper for Lee’s Farm and Home Electric business where she spent many hours making doll clothes. She was a bookkeeper for many years for JC Penney and is probably best remembered for her beautiful wedding cakes. She made cakes for a couple of generations in the Crosby area.
Mary wed Lee Wenker on July 25, 1938, in Williston. Lee was from Columbus. Together they raised four children: Mary Lee, Dean, Donald and Steven.
Mary was part of a large, happy family of nine children. Her parents also raised four nieces and nephews, so they had a house full of fun.
Mary had resided at the Good Samaritan Center in Crosby for the past five years. She enjoyed all the crafts and bingo games and returned to her room with many $1 bills!
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee; her siblings, Gordon, Gladys, Lester, Roy, Wayne, Lillian, Morris and Howard; and a son-in-law, David Rude.
She is survived by her children, Mary Lee Rude of Rapid City, S.D., Dean (Diane) Wenker of Sahuarita, Ariz., Don (Teg) Wenker of Woodinville, Wash., and Steve Wenker of Williston. She will be missed by 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be today, Sunday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby with Myra Osvold officiating.
Burial will be Monday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. at Crosby City Cemetery.
Memorials will be designated to Good Samaritan Center in Crosby and St. Luke’s Hospital in Crosby.
