Magic City Campus hosting open house

Magic City Campus will host an open house for current sophomores, juniors and their parents Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. The open house is designed as an opportunity for students and parents to consult teachers in order to make an informed decision when choosing classes for the 2013-14 school year, will staff from each department on hand to answer questions.

Students have already received their registration guides and were encouraged to seek parental input. The guide can also be found on the Minot Public Schools website at (minot.k12.nd.us). Students will make their final registration decisions in school on Feb. 6-7 at Central Campus and Feb. 8 at Magic City Campus.

Poster contest offers billboard display prize

Keep North Dakota Clean Incorporated and Newman Outdoor Advertising are sponsoring the 45th annual Keep North Dakota Clean poster contest for students in grades 1-8 and for students with special needs. Students create artwork that reflects his or her knowledge about the responsibility we all have to keep our state and water clean, reduce waste, recycle, plant trees, prevent wildfires, create wildlife habitat and use all our natural resources wisely. The first place poster in each grade will be turned into a billboard and placed near the winner’s hometown.

KNDC and ND Parks and Recreation Department are sponsoring a statewide digital media contest to promote keeping North Dakota trails clean and green by showcasing the creative talents of students in grades 9-12. This could be an image, video or audio clip.

All posters and digital artwork are due by March 13. Each school is encouraged to send in one winning school poster from each grade 1-8 and special needs. Any student in grades 9-12 interested in participating in the digital media contest may submit one entry. The rules and regulations, along with an entry form, can be downloaded at (www.keep-nd-clean.org).

All state winners, their immediate family, and grade 1-8 teachers will be invited to an awards ceremony on April 26 at Washburn. Immediately after the ceremony, a luncheon will be served and everyone will get free admission to the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan.

First-place poster winners receive a cash award of $100, a certificate, gold medallion and have their posters made into a billboard by Newman Outdoor Advertising. Second- and third-place poster winners receive a cash award of $75 or $50, a certificate, and a silver or bronze medallion. The first-place digital artwork winner will receive a cash award of $100, a certificate, and a gold medallion. The second- and third-place digital artwork winners will receive a $75 or $50 cash award, a certificate, and a silver or bronze medallion.

The 2013 poster contest grades, themes and sponsors are listed below:

Grade one and special needs: Keep North Dakota Clean; grade two: “Only YOU can prevent forest fires!”; grade three: “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”; grade four: “Habitat: Homes for Wildlife”; grade five: “Trees are terrific … in cities and towns”; grade six: “Help prevent runoff pollution”; grade seven: “North Dakota’s Waters: Keep Them Clean”; and grade eight: “Explore a Greener North Dakota.”

Decoteau to represent N.D. at environment summit

Ashaye Decoteau, a student at Turtle Mountain Community High School in Belcourt, has been chosen to represent North Dakota as a National Youth Delegate at the 2013 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University from June 23-28.

A group of 250 students from across the country was chosen to attend the week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation. The program is sponsored by George Mason University, National Geographic and the National Zoo.

Decoteau was chosen based on academic accomplishments and an interest in the sciences and conservation studies.

Monroe to represent state at journalism summit

Cassandra Monroe, of Drake, a student at Drake-Anamoose High School has been nominated to represent North Dakota as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2013 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University.

Monroe has the opportunity to join a select group of 250 students from across the country to participate in an intensive week-long study of journalism and media. Monroe was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies. The Washington Journalism and Media Conference will be held July 7-July 12.

Minot Area Dollars for Scholars launches website

Minot Area Dollars for Scholars launched a new website on Jan. 18 through a new software tool provided by Scholarship America, Dollars for Scholars’ parent organization. The website is (www.Minot.dollarsforscholars.org).

This new website will help students in the community access more scholarships. Students can create an online profile, which allows them to apply for and be matched to multiple scholarships on both the local and the national level.

The website is customized to keep the local community updated on chapter news, events and deadlines; provide information on what’s going on in education on a national level; and give students and parents a one-stop-shop for chapter scholarships, educational resources, opportunities and events.

MSU online programs lauded by U.S. News

Minot State University’s College of Business online graduate programs and MSU undergraduate online programs got favorable rankings from U.S. News and World Report in its annual “Top Online Education Program” rankings.

According to a press release issued by MSU, the College of Business’s online Master of Science in management and Master of Science in information systems program ranked 18th in the nation, in the top 7 percent, for “Faculty Credentials and Training.” They also ranked 44th (top 20 percent) for “Student Services and Technology,” 64th (top 30 percent) for “Admissions Selectivity” and 81st (top 38 percent) for “Overall Rank.” In addition, the programs are among the most affordable online master’s programs in the nation.

For the overall performance of its online undergraduate programs, MSU ranked 54th (top 23 percent) for “Faculty Credentials and Training,” 62nd for “Student Engagement,” and 51st (21.5 percent) for Overall Rank. MSU’s online bachelor’s degree programs include management, management information systems, marketing, international business, nursing for registered nurses, general studies, applied management and applied business information technology.

About 16 percent of MSU College of Business students take their major business program entirely online, while approximately 80 percent take at least one course online.

U.S. News ranked online bachelor’s degree programs and online master’s degree programs in business, engineering, nursing, education and computer information technology. Programs needed to have at least 80 percent of their course content available online.

MSU academic hall now seeking nominees for 2013

The Academic Hall of Fame Committee at Minot State University is soliciting nominations for spring 2013 inductees. Committee members would like help identifying nominees to highlight for its students and public that had great careers begin at MSU. Induction into the Academic Hall of Fame honors meritorious service in an academic discipline and highlights the accomplishments of the university’s most distinguished alumni. Nominations may be made by any individual or organization, either within Minot State University or from the community at large. Nominees must be MSU alumni who completed a significant portion of their education at MSU, and who have gone on to complete an advanced degree and made substantial contribution to the advancement of their field of study.

Nominations must include a letter for support from the academic division/department at Minot State University. The deadline for nominee submissions is April 1. Submissions are first reviewed by the committee; then inductees are chosen from finalists by the faculty senate in March.
