Martha Hall, 84, Minot, formerly of Chaseley, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, in a Velva nursing home.
Martha was born in Newman Township, Ward County, the daughter of Jacob and Lydia (Berg) Bechler. She was raised and educated in Newman Township, attended Newman Township School and graduated from Sawyer High School at the age of 16. After high school she attended Minot State University.
A friend of Martha’s invited her to a picnic in Hurdsfield, where she met her husband, Fred Hall. Martha and Fred were married on Nov. 11, 1951, at the Sawyer Baptist Church. Martha and Fred moved to Chaseley to spend the rest of their lives together. They bought land northwest of Chaseley, building a house they lived in for over 50 years.
In her younger days, she was actively involved in a homemakers club and also active in the church in Chaseley. She was an active farm wife and always had the best homemade meals. Anyone who came to visit never went home hungry.
She loved gardening, especially raising flowers. Her favorite flower was a yellow rose. She was a great seamstress, making a lot of her own clothes. She also made her three nieces’ Easter dresses every year. Martha loved making things with her hands. She would make anything from plywood cut-out decorations to lamps.
Martha and Fred retired in the late 1970s from farming, spending the rest of their lives together. They did a lot of traveling and enjoyed going to Texas for a few months during the winter. Martha was a very conservative person; if anyone needed to go the bathroom and it was daylight, then the outhouse had your name on it. Martha will always be considered as a second mother to her three nieces. Martha’s best friend was Maria Wonnenberg of Bismarck.
Fred died on Feb. 8, 2010, and she moved to Minot to be near her nieces.
Those most honored to share in her life are: nieces, Theresa Boerschig, Minot, Lydia (Robert) Robarge, Minot, Lori (Kenneth) Schiele, Norwich; great-nieces and great-nephews, Sabrina Senger, Scot (Stephanie) Swain, Lee (Crystal) Boerschig, Jessie Schiele, Justin (Michaelyn) Schiele and Jacie (Jonah) Lantto. A number of great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews also survive.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Fred; her sister, Ella Mae Boerschig; and a brother, Charley Bechler.
