Medalen out as Ryan AD, coach

Bishop Ryan athletic director and boys basketball coach Scott Medalen has been relieved of his duties.

Medalen, who spent the last nine years at the school after a 12-year stint as girls basketball coach at Des Lacs-Burlington, was let go on Thursday night.

Ryan Superintendent Terry Voiles confirmed the severance with Medalen on Friday, but wouldn’t elaborate on the termination.

“He’s no longer an employee at this Catholic school,” Voiles said. “And that’s all you’re going to get from me.”

Attempts to reach Medalen for comment were unsuccessful.

Assistant coach Tyler Ystaas took over the coaching vacancy in the interim during the Lions’ 57-54 win over Velva Friday night. Voiles said the search for a full-time replacement has already begun.

The school won’t be looking too far to fill its open athletic director slot.

“We’re OK there,” Voiles said of the vacant position. “It will be filled in-house.”

Medalen eclipsed 300 wins in his 20-year coaching career, most of which was spent with the DL-B girls basketball team. He missed the regional tournament just once in that span.

In Medalen’s final game as coach on Tuesday, the Lions dropped a 56-34 decision to Our Redeemer’s Christian School – their first loss to the Knights under Medalen.

Medalen didn’t dress several varsity players in the game and started just one regular starter.
