Robert ‘Bud’ Sandstrom
Robert “Bud” Sandstrom, 86, Minot, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, in a Minot health center, surrounded by his loving family. Bud had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2011.
Robert Gordon Sandstrom was born Dec. 20, 1926, the son of John and Esther (Nelson) Sandstrom, in Minot. He attended Foxholm School for three years when his family purchased a farm near Lonetree, where he received his education. Bud was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church of Minot.
In 1946 he joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego. He was honorably discharged. In 1947 he was united in marriage to Morva Baker in Minneapolis. They made their home on the family farm near Lonetree. Bud loved the land and the farm animals. He always had dogs, which he loved. He was a very friendly person with a good sense of humor. Morva passed away after a long illness on April 3, 2000.
In 2001, Robert married Mavis Savig, whom he had known for years. They made their home in Minot, but Bud still spent a lot of time at the farm, which he still called home. Bud and Mavis went on several bus trips, which they enjoyed a lot.
Robert was a collector of old cars, trucks, antiques and much more, which he kept on the farm at Lonetree. He also had a fully-equipped old schoolhouse, which originated in 1887. It was the first country school in Ward County restored and has been donated to the Ward County Historical Society.
The last few years were hard for him, because of his declining health, but he kept a positive attitude and always hoped for the best. He had many friends and will be deeply missed.
Robert was a 60-year member of the Minot American Legion Post #26. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles Aerie, First Lutheran Church and an associate member of the Bread of Life Lutheran Church, all Minot.
