Martin J. Gieser

Martin J. Gieser, 74, Minot, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, in a Minot hospital.

Martin was born Oct. 17, 1938, at Minot, the son of Frank and Thelma (Wemer) Gieser. He was raised in Iowa and educated in a one-room schoolhouse in Taylor before returning to Minot to graduate from Minot High School in 1956.

Martin served with the North Dakota National Guard before entering into active duty service with the Navy on April 23, 1957. He honorably served his country during the Cuban Missile Crisis, participated in President John F. Kennedy’s funeral service and served in the Vietnam War. He returned to North Dakota after receiving his honorable discharge.

Martin was once married to Mary Helen Hill. Throughout the years, he was employed at Minot White Drug in the camera department, at Swenson Furniture, Geiger Construction and at Minot Air Force Base in the paint shop.

Martin was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. He was also a member of the Minot Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #753, the American Legion Post #26 and the Disabled American Veterans. His hobbies included, hunting, fishing and reading.

He is survived by: his daughter, Mary Theresa Hesse, Plummer, Minn.; son, Martin “Rusty” Lawrence, of Hawaii; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nephews Jeff Gieser, Bismarck, John Gieser, Fargo, Mike Gieser, Williston, and Scott Jordan, Minot.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Joseph, brother, Frank “Mike” Gieser; and sister, Sheryl Jordan.

Funeral service: Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at 11 a.m., in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Today, Feb. 14, from 2 to 5 p.m., in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: Memorials are preferred to the Minot Commission on Aging Meals on Wheels Program.
