Cardinals pin their way to semifinals

FARGO – The Carrington High School wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the Class B state dual tournament on Thursday in impressive fashion.

Jumpstarted by defending state heavyweight champion Cordell Schroeder, the Cardinals rattled off six consecutive first-period pins en route to a 59-18 win over Stanley-Powers Lake-Tioga-Ray at the Fargodome.

“We came out a little flat and we knew we had to have pins and that’s just what it’s gonna amount to in these duals,” Carrington coach Kelly Hagel said. “Where we can get pins, we have to.”

Carrington, the champion out of Region 2, meets Region 1 runner-up Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock in the semifinals today. Hagel said the Cardinals moved one step closer to challenging South Border for the dual title. South Border, Region 1’s champion, has to get through Region 2 runner-up Central Cass first, however.

“It’s going to get tougher as we go through the tournament,” Hagel said. “Our goal is to get in there and wrestle South Border. That was our goal all along the way.”

If the first day was any indication, the Cardinals are ready. Schroeder started the pinning barrage with a fall in just 57 seconds. Matthew Neumiller (106), Lucas Brown (113), Keenan Kvamme (120), Chaz Bauer (126) and Walker Carr (132) finished it with pins that took a combined 6 minutes, 56 seconds.

“You get momentum going, you don’t wanna relinquish that,” Hagel said. “They feed off each other. It’s like a lot of things. One good attitude or one bad attitude can make the difference out here or in the practice room.”

Stanley-PL-T-R received a pin from Garrett Hoelscher at 220 to bring the Blue Jays within two points at 20-18.

But Carrington’s run ended any hopes of a Blue Jay rally. The Cardinals won 11 of 14 matches with Patrick Freeman (138), Billy Holtan (145), Riley Lura (142), Brett Lyman (160) and Austin Schuldheisz (195) also winning.

The Blue Jays’ other two wins came from Summer Clayton (182) and Abe Roehrich (170), both of whom earned pins.

Stanley-PL-T-R drops into the consolation bracket where it meets Hettinger-Scranton-Richardton-Taylor-Hebron. The other consolation match pits Beulah-Hazen versus Bishop Ryan.
