Ella Modin

Ella Modin, 91, Kenmare, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, in a Kenmare hospital.

Ella was born on April 1, 1921, a daughter of Peder and Karen Watland, in Knox. She was raised and educated in the Knox area, where she graduated from Knox High School in 1939. Ella furthered her education by attending Minot State Teachers College, where she earned her teaching certificate.

On Aug. 16, 1941, Ella was united in marriage to Ralph Modin in Longview, Wash. They made their home in Washington until 1943, when they returned to Kenmare, where Ella was an educator, teaching at Crowfoot Country School and later the Kenmare Elementary School until her retirement in 1974. Along with teaching, Ella assisted Ralph with the operations of the farm. Ralph died Aug. 31, 1991. Following his death, she continued to live in Kenmare.

She enjoyed working with ceramics, painting, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren. Ella loved to entertain and had the gift of hospitality. She was a longtime member of the Faith Baptist Church, Kenmare, where she served with the ladies group, and as a Sunday school teacher and Awana leader.

Ella is survived by: children, Wanda (Jim) Rodin, Kenmare, Marie Modin, Kenmare, Ralph (Sandra) Modin, Kenmare, Dr. Brance (Kathy) Modin, Cloquet, Minn.; grandchildren, Dennis (Kathy) Rodin, Dan (Penny) Sticka, Steven (Kim) Rodin, DuWayne (Nette) Rodin, Lyndon (Lori) Modin, Levi (Shana) Hauganoe, Joey (Brenna) Thompson, Joshua (Emily) Modin; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sisters, Olga Stone, Julie Estrem, Bertha Wright, Wally Ward and Ida Wright.

Funeral service: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, Kenmare.

Burial: At a later date in the spring at Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare.

Visitation: Today, Feb. 19, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.
