Irene Janz

Irene C. Janz, 90, Makoti, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck.

Irene Catherine Mikkelson was born April 16, 1922, in Roseglen, to Otto and Myrtle (Cranston) Mikkelson. Irene attended school at Roseglen and one year at Makoti High School. She then moved to Michigan to live with her aunt and uncle and attended one year of school there.

On April 16, 1939, Irene married Alfred Janz at Max. Following their marriage they lived in Minot for four years, and in 1943, they moved to Hiddenwood Township, Ward County, south of Makoti, where they farmed and raised dairy cattle. In 1975 they moved into Makoti.

Alfred passed away on Feb. 13, 1998, and in the fall of that year Irene moved to Minot. In 2008 she moved into Trinity Homes in Minot, and in June 2012 she moved to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck.

Irene was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Makoti, and was active in the ladies aid. She was also a member of the Hiddenwood and Makoti homemakers clubs. In her younger years she volunteered with the 4-H club in Makoti.

Those who shared in her life: sons, Blaine (Leona) Janz, of Sheridan, Wyo., and Donald (Beverly) Janz, Balfour; daughters, Joan (Nolan) Fjeldahl and Susan (Robert) Erickson, all of Plaza, and Jodi (Michael) McKinzie, Bismarck; 17 grandchildren, Todd Janz, Shari Janz, Gary (Tammy) Janz, Brian (Heidi) Janz, Janelle (Marty) Miller, Darren (Jen) Janz, Andrew (Jana) Fjeldahl, Cynthia (Kevin) Cross, Timothy Fjeldahl, Karen (Brian) Boehm, Kelly Erickson, Shane (Jen) Erickson, Kipten Erickson, Kristina (Brian Hare) Erickson, Shawn (Kristen) McKinzie, Corey McKinzie and Courtney (Brian) Haugstad; 25 great-grandchildren; sister, Grace, Shaw, Minot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; her parents; sisters, Marion, Alice, Dorothy, Leona and Delores; and brothers, Russell and Lawrence.

Funeral: Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at 2 p.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Makoti.

Visitation: Friday, Feb. 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Burial: St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Makoti, in the spring.
