Martha Rovenko, 93, Minot, formerly of Max, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at ManorCare Health Services in Minot.
Martha Sylvia Sevig was born April 14, 1919, the daughter of Peder and Anne (Halvorson) Sevig, in Palermo. She was raised and educated in Palermo and graduated from Palermo High School in 1937. She then attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis for a year before attending Trinity School of Nursing in Minot, where she graduated with her nursing degree in 1941.
Martha began her career as a registered nurse at the New Rockford Hospital. She later went to work at the San Haven Sanatorium for a couple of years before becoming employed at Trinity Hospital in Minot. She moved to Portland, Ore., in 1948 and worked as a private duty nurse for a couple years.
Martha married Jack Rovenko on March 3, 1949, in Portland, Ore. They moved back to North Dakota and made their home on a farm in Rushville Township of Ward County, where they farmed for more than 30 years. During this time, she continued working at Trinity Hospital. In 1979, they moved to Minot. Jack passed away March 22, 1993. Following her husband’s death, she moved back to Max. She moved to Minot in 2004.
While living in Rushville Township, she was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Max. While living in Minot, she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Dorcas Circle, the Minot Senior Citizens, and the American Association of Retired Persons.
She and Jack delivered Meals-on-Wheels for several years after moving to Minot. One of her joys was shopping at garage sales, especially pulling her grandchildren along in their little red wagon. She enjoyed search-a-word and crossword puzzles, and playing cards, especially pinochle and Rook. Martha enjoyed watching her Minnesota Twins, Lawrence Welk and the Billy Graham Crusades. She was very much looking forward to the birth of her first great-grandson, Ben Richner, in March.
Surviving family includes: children, Kathy Rovenko, Apple Valley, Minn., Ronald (Jackie) Rovenko, Boston, Mass., and John (Vicki) Rovenko, Minot; granddaughters, Jennifer, Sarah and Molly Rovenko and Emily Richner, all of Boston, Jessica and Julia Rovenko, of Minot; sister-in-law, Alpha Sevig, Minot; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; brothers, Harold, Arthur, Alfred and Palmer; and sisters, Hannah Hanson and Esther Kabanuck.
Funeral: Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at 10 a.m., in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials: Are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church, Minot.
