Teton men win Region XIII tournament

WAHPETON – Williston State clipped North Dakota State College of Science 69-66 on Monday night, capturing the Region XIII tournament crown.

The Tetons (25-8), which split with the Wildcats during the regular season, will host the district championship on Thursday at 7 p.m., taking on Iowa Western.

The winner of that game advances to next week’s NJCAA tournament in Hutchison, Kan.

With a one-point lead and under a minute left, all-American guard Marquel Curtis drained a back-breaking 3-pointer to ice the contest.

Curtis finished with a game-high 32 points.

“That was absolutely huge,” WSC coach Eric Peterson said. “At that point in the game you want the ball in your best player’s hands.”

The two clubs went tit for tat throughout the contest, but a late 8-0 run gave WSC its biggest cushion.

The Tetons were able to overcome 15 turnovers in a game that featured 10 lead changes.

“You know it’s going to be close,” Peterson said. “And all you need is just one run.”

Jordan Jackson (13 points) and Mitch Kallevig (11) also reached doubled figures for the Tetons. The Wildcats were paced by Xavier Blackburn’s 20 points and eight rebounds.
