Raymond ‘Buzzy’ Earl Vollmer

Raymond “Buzzy” Earl Vollmer, 86, Willow City, passed away March 18, 2013, at Trinity Hospital, Minot. His funeral will be held Friday, March 22, 2013, at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Willow City. Visitation will be today, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a prayer service today at 7 p.m., at Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery at Willow City.

Raymond Earl Vollmer, was born Dec. 30, 1926, in Willow Vale Township of Bottineau County to Arthur Bernard Vollmer and Lelie Thetta (Tuttle) Vollmer. He was baptized and confirmed at the former First Presbyterian Church, Willow City. Buzzy attended school in Willow City until being drafted into the Army during his senior year. He served in the Army in Austria and Germany, June 1945 through October 1946, as a military policeman transporting prisoners to and from the Nuremberg trials. He graduated from Willow City High School in 2002, at the age of 75.

Buzzy married Helen Bernice Ness on Dec. 27, 1952, in Barton Lutheran Church at Barton. Buzzy was a life-long farmer, and was honored by the Bottineau County Agricultural Improvement Association in 2009 as a Golden Harvest recipient. His community activities consisted of Ostby Township Board, Willow City Rural Fire Deptartment Board, the Lyle B. Rich American Legion Post, a 50+ year member, and an elder of the former First Presbyterian Church, all of Willow City, serving in various positions over the years.

In 2011, he had the honor of being part of the Roughrider Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., for World War II veterans.

He is survived by: his wife of 60 years, and their five children, Daniel (LeAnn), of Rolla, Joan (Dwight) Gunter, of Towner, Rebecca (Steven) Heilman, of Minot, John E. Vollmer, of Devils Lake, and Jason Lee (Alana) Vollmer, of Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Sarah (Jeremy) Hjelseth, of Fargo, Rachel (Dylan Wald) Vollmer, of LaMoure, Seth (Jillissa) Vollmer, of Bismarck, Derek (Naemi) Gunter, of Columbus, Ga., Nathan (Lauren) Gunter, of Granville, Travis Heilman and Luke Heilman, both of Minot, and Kayla Vollmer, of Bismarck. There are two great-grandchildren, Vivian Gunter and Olivia Hjelseth. Also surviving are his siblings, Evelyn Law, of Rolla, Doris Semler and Victor (Doris) Vollmer, both Willow City; sisters-in-law, Gertie Olsen and Olive Gibbs, both of Willow City; as well as many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lelia Vollmer; and brothers-in-law, Raymond (Junior) Law, Gerald Semler, Pete Olsen and Chester Gibbs.
