Gladys Irene Barnes, 90, Minot, and formerly of Bowbells, died Friday, March 22, 2013, in a Dickinson nursing home.
Gladys was born July 31, 1922, on the family farm near Bowbells, to Arthur and Selma (Thompson) Hanson. She was reared on the family farm in Denmark Township of Ward County, near Bowbells. She attended a rural school and was proud to have attained her high school diploma by taking correspondence classes. As a young adult she assisted her family with the operation of the farm.
Gladys married Dennis Barnes on Oct. 5, 1957, at the family farm. They made their home in Canada and Alaska prior to settling in Minot in 1964. Gladys was employed at Sears and by the Minot Public Schools Hot Lunch Program, primarily at Washington Elementary School, prior to her retirement.
Gladys was an active member of Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot, and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She especially enjoyed sewing, gardening, berry picking and puzzles.
Gladys’ loving family includes: her husband of 55 years, Dennis; daughters, Susanne (David) Wallace, of Dickinson, and Kathryn (Mike) Larson, of Minot; six grandchildren, Cori, David Jr. and Jason Wallace; Shannon Bertsche, Kelsey Howard and Hannah Williams; two great-grandchildren, Rylee and Brody Wallace; sister-in-law, Rose Hanson of Minot; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Arvie and Lavern; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Hanson.
A private celebration of the life of Gladys Barnes will be held in the Thomas Family Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.
Interment: Will be in the Bowbells Community Cemetery later in the spring.
Book signing: Today, March 26, from 2 to 5 p.m., in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials: Are preferred to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
