Trinity receives Silver Award for stroke care

The American Heart Association has accorded Trinity Health its Stroke Silver Quality Achievement Award for demonstrating high compliance with national stroke care standards, according to a news release. The organization considers the Silver Award for programs that have consistently met the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelines standards for one year.

Trinity Health launched a comprehensive program in 2011 for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients and last year it received accreditation by the Joint Commission as a Certified Primary Stroke Center.

Trinity’s program emphasizes best care practices to improve stroke outcomes along with education and prevention strategies to help people manage risk factors and learn what they should do if stroke symptoms occur.

“Our biggest concern is that people will ignore the symptoms and fail to seek immediate medical care,” said Jerilyn Alexander, registered nurse and Stroke Coordinator for Trinity. “Stroke requires immediate treatment within three hours the longer the wait, the greater the damage to the brain and the greater the potential for disability afterwards.”

Fighting chance: teen self-defense class offered

Due to the increase in the population and changes in the Minot community, this growth can be overwhelming for parents with teenage girls when thinking of their security.

With thanks to the support of Power of the Purse, the Minot Family YMCA will be offering a self-defense class for teenage girls in grades 9 to 12. Power of the Purse is an affiliate of the Minot Area Community Foundation created in 2007 by a network of Minot women business leaders.

The grant received from Power of the Purse will fund 200 teenage girls to attend the self-defense class free of charge. Dan and Tina Merck, certified self-defense instructors from ATA Martial Arts, will be teaching the class. All participants will receive a keychain safety alarm with a light.

There are several benefits of taking a self-defense class including teaching you how to defend yourself in a variety of situations; increasing your self-confidence; toning muscles and improving balance; and providing social interaction with your peers.

Five different dates will be offered for convenience with a maximum of 40 participants per class. Dates for the class are Sunday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m.; Sunday, April 14, at 5:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 4, at 1 p.m.; Sunday, May 19, at 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m. Classes will be held at the Minot Family YMCA.
