Phyllis Braaten, 80, Minot, formerly of Velva, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 29, 2013, in a Velva healthcare facility.
Phyllis Levon Byre was born Feb. 23, 1933, a daughter of Roal and Olga (Askvig) Byre, in White Earth. The family lived in White Earth until Phyllis was four years of age, when they moved to Carpio. Phyllis graduated from Berthold High School in 1951.
On Sept. 20, 1953, Phyllis was united in marriage to the love of her life, Gordon Braaten, in Berthold. They made their home in Velva, where they raised their four children.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning and was a wonderful gardener and homemaker. She was always actively involved in her husband’s and her children’s lives. Phyllis was an active member of the Oak Valley Lutheran Church of Velva, where she participated in several church activities. She loved reading her Bible and listening to Billy Graham. She had an awesome personality and contagious smile and loved spending times with her family.
Phyllis is survived by: Husband of 60 years, Gordon, Minot; two daughters, Diane Braaten, Grand Forks, Rhonda (Rick) Womble, Dalhart, Texas; two sons, Greg (Diane) Braaten, Voltaire, Shawn (Holly) Braaten, Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Chris (Annette) Braaten, Danny, Kendra, Ethan, Hannah, Jeremy, Rachelle and Josh (Danae) Womble and Alisha (Clint) Harris; seven great-grandchildren, Taryn, Jairus, Cameron, Garrett, Ava, Jacob, and Thomas; two sisters, Ruth Rauschenberger, Minot, and Marlene (Dick) Muse, Bismarck; two brothers, Kennard (Arlene) Byre, Maxbass, and Ronnie (Karen) Byre, Minot; brother-in-law, Andy Eshenko, Sawyer; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Walter, Jennie and Evelyn.
Funeral service: Thursday, April 4, 2013, at 11 a.m., in Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.
Graveside service: Thursday, 2 p.m., at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Prayer service: Today, April 3, at 5 p.m., Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.
Visitation: Today, from 2 to 5 p.m., Thompson-Larson Funeral Home in Velva.
