New hotels in region

HARVEY A hotel company with a penchant for small towns is inviting guests to three area communities this spring.

Cobblestone Hotels opened a 32-room hotel in Harvey on March 11. A 45-room hotel is scheduled to open April 12 in Bottineau and a 36-unit hotel is to open in Rugby May 1.

The communities are welcoming the hotels not only for the additional guest rooms but also for the conference space. The meeting room in the Cobblestone Inn & Suites in Harvey will accommodate about 75 people.

“With the guest rooms and this meeting space, that does open up opportunities for us,” said economic development director Nicki Weissman. “We can do other things that we have not been able to do within the city.”

She expects interest in the meeting room to come from local companies for corporate meetings or residents for family reunions as well as other larger events.

Harvey has an existing motel, with another motel located just outside city limits. Still, the number of rooms hasn’t always been adequate to accommodate demand, especially during hunting season, Weissman said.

Harvey has been working for several years to address its need for more hotel space. Weissman said the city has been in conversation with different developers but never was able to make a project go until Cobblestone.

“All of a sudden, they came along, and things just kind of fell together,” she said.

Having the additional hotel rooms in Bottineau also will make it easier to attract events, said Diane Olson, economic development directortineau has three other lodges and there also lodging at Lake Metigoshe, but with the extent of both winter and summer activities in the area, the new hotel is needed, she said.

The Cobblestone in Bottineau will have meeting space for 500 people.

“I am really looking forward to that. That definitely will be a huge impact for us,” Olson said. “It’s always been a challenge to do conferences when we don’t have the large space.”

It’s a good sign for the community to have new construction, both with the hotel and a Farm Credit Services building going up cross the road, she said. Farm Credit Services is just completing a new building that will include a small conference space for farm safety events and other activities of the agency.

Based in Neenah, Wis., Cobblestone Hotels offers an upper mid-scale brand for smaller communities. With the three newest hotels, Cobblestone will have six properties in North Dakota. The first three are in Carrington, Langdon and Killdeer.

Cobblestone opened its first hotel in 2008 and now operates in seven states. The company has seven properties under construction and 35 under development. It reports that it is one of the fastest-growing brands, increasing from nine hotels to 21 in 2012. It expects to double again in 2013.

BriMark Builders of Oshkosh, Wis., developed the Harvey location.

The hotel in Harvey offers extended stay and whirlpool suites with a variety of room amenities, including 40-inch flat-panel televisions, microwaves, refrigerators and free high-speed Internet. The hotel also has an on-site lounge, hot breakfast buffet, guest laundry and on-site convenience store
