‘Swing into Spring’ benefits Minot schools

It’s time for the eighth annual “Swing into Spring” concert, a partnership between the Minot Community Concert Band and the Minot Public Schools Foundation as a fundraiser for Minot Public Schools.

On Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Riverside, Joe Alme will once again be directing an organization he’s been very familiar with for around 40 years.

“Since Tim Wollenzien resigned to take another job, I’m finishing out the season for him, both here and for the International Music Camp until a permanent director is picked,” he said. “It’s always a joy and privilege to work with these talented musicians.”

The program will begin with The Wellington Choir from the Wellington Assisted Living, a group which travels throughout the area usually a couple of times a month.

The concert band has a full program, including well-known numbers such as “Strike up the Band” and “America the Beautiful” as well as lesser-known works like “Flight of the Piasa” and “Marche des Parachutistes Belges.” Also included is one of Gustav Holst’s military marches, “Second Suite in F.”

A trumpet trio comprising Angie Bishop, Todd Cresap and Pat Schwan will be double- and triple- tonguing Leroy Anderson’s “Bugler’s Holiday.”

A bonus is the audience participation in the form of a dance after the concert, with music from a dance band made up of members of the MCCB. A raffle will be held at the end of the evening with prizes as diverse as a Yamaha home theater system from the Stereo Shop and gift certificates from Marketplace Foods to car washes from Harley’s Arrowhead. Raffle tickets are $10 each.

Tickets are available at the door, the Minot Public School Administration Building, 215-2nd St. SE, and Jacobsen Music, 315-31st Ave. SW. The ticket price, including the concert, hors d’oeuvres, and dance which follows, is $10 for adults and $5 for students, with proceeds benefiting the Minot Public School Foundation. The Foundation supports educational activities of the Minot School District through staff incentive grants. These grants enable teachers to have access to educational resources not normally available to them.
