Norman E. Stromstad

Norman E. Stromstad, 87, Bismarck, formerly of Carpio, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Good Samaritan, Bismarck. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 2 p.m., in Lutheran Church of the Cross, Bismarck, with the Rev. Donna Dohrmann officiating. There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan, at a later date.

Norman was born May 30, 1925, to Arthur and Malla (Johnson) Stromstad. He graduated from Carpio High School in Carpio. Norman served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division, from 1943 to 1946. In January 1946, he marched in the World War II Victory Day parade in New York City.

Norman spent his career in the retail grocery business, starting in his family’s Red and White general merchandise store in Carpio. He later worked for Nash Finch and spent 30 years with Proctor and Gamble.

He married Rosalie Stalwick, on Aug. 25, 1946, in Berthold.

Norman was a charter member of Lutheran Church of the Cross in Bismarck, and was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks, and Bismarck Mandan Grocers Association.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, tennis, woodworking, house boating on the Missouri River, his home on Pickerel Lake, Minn., and wintering in Mesa, Ariz.

He is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Rosalie, Bismarck; two daughters, Julie Olson, Annandale, Minn., and Jane (Mark) Lynne, Batavia, Ill.; two sons, John (Judy) Stromstad, Bismarck, and Jeff (Kathy) Stromstad, Mandan; 10 grandchildren, John, Joshua, Jay, Whitney, Katie, Kirsten, Eric, Anne, Sarah, and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Madeline, Benjamin, DeShawn, Jayden, Johanna, and Elliot.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Irene Westereng; and brother, Arnold Stromstad.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1004 E. Highland Acres Road, Bismarck, ND 58501, as he was a founding member and supporter.
