Thelma (Himle) Larson

Thelma Norma Larson, 86, Minot, and formerly of Harlow, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in Northwood Deaconess Health Center, Northwood, surrounded by her daughter and son-in-law.

Thelma Norma Himle was born on Oct. 11, 1926, on the family farm near Wolford, to Nels and Anna (Muri) Himle. She was reared and educated in the Island Lake area near Rolette, and graduated from Rolette High School in 1943. She continued her education at Minot State Teachers College, where she earned her standard teaching certificate. She taught at Gallagher #1 School near Harlow for five years.

Thelma married Carroll Larson on June 20, 1947, in Leeds. They made their home on a farm north of Leeds and she continued teaching in the Harlow area. In 1952 they moved to Minot, where Thelma was employed at JC Penney Department Store and Buttrey’s Ladies Clothing Store in Minot before beginning employment with the North Dakota State Highway Department. She worked there for more than 30 years until retiring in 1990.

From 1966 to 1977, she trained Future Business Leaders of America students from Minot High School-Magic City Campus. FBLA honored her with an award for providing guidance, inspiration and training to Minot’s youth.

Special highlights of her life included numerous family vacations to Detroit Lakes, Minn., and a trip to Norway with her daughter, Sandy, in 1997. Thelma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Minot, where she enjoyed her time spent in Luther League and as a church service greeter. Some of her most enjoyable hobbies and pastimes were flower gardening, collecting rhinestone jewelry, rummage sale shopping and visiting family and friends in the Leeds, Cando and Grand Forks areas. She was an award-winning floral bouquet designer at the North Dakota State Fair. Thelma always enjoyed listening to humorous jokes, a good tongue twister or limerick, and laughing with family and friends.

Thelma’s loving family includes: Carroll, her husband of 65 years; daughter Sandra Larson-Dienstmann (Doug Dienstmann), of Minot; stepgranddaughter, Alexis Dienstmann, of Fargo; siblings, Harold Himle, of Salt Lake City, Hazel Johnson, Cando; sisters-in-law, Delores Himle, of Fargo, Irene Himle, of Leeds, and Stella Himle, of Moorhead, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Opal Himle and Sadie Qvammen; brothers, Arnold, Joe, Lawrence and Nels Jr.; brothers-in-law, Gerald Qvammen and Lawrence Johnson; God-daughter and niece, Karen Anderson, and nephew, Douglas Himle.

Celebration of the Life of Thelma Larson: Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church in Minot.

Graveside Service: Later in the Spring in the Leeds Cemetery.

Visitation: Today, April 26, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
