Minimum wage should go up

President Obama’s call to raise the federal minimum wage to $9 per hour has merit.

The present federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. North Dakota’s minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. There has not been an increase in either the federal or North Dakota’s minimum wage since 2009.

Think about what $7.25 per hour would buy in 2009. What does $7.25 per hour buy you now? Considering inflation and the increase in the basic cost of living, $7.25 per hour is not a living wage.

The federal and North Dakota’s minimum wage needs to move ahead to $9 per hour to keep pace with inflation and the cost of living.
