Truck fire stops traffic for 2 hours

A truck hauling diesel was struck by a boom truck on N.D. Highway 23 south of Sawyer about nine miles east of U.S. 83 just after 12:45 p.m. Thursday, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The tanker hauling the diesel had a capacity for 1,000 gallons of diesel, although it is unknown how much was in the tank at the time of the incident.

The fire burned for about two hours as the Velva Fire Department, with the assistance of Minot Rural Fire Department, fought the flames. The Highway Patrol and Ward County Sheriff’s Department deputies held traffic back.

By 3:30 p.m. the trucks continued to smoke lightly as they rested on scorched earth on the eastbound ditch of the highway.
