MSU hockey team signs goalie

The Minot State University men’s club hockey team announced the signing of goaltender Will McLean on Tuesday.

McLean, a 6-foot-2 native of Zenon Park, Saskatchewan, played last season with the Tri Town Thunder of the Prairie Junior Hockey League. He finished 17-5 with a 2.7 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.

“Will is a great pickup for our program,” MSU coach Wade Regier said in a press release. “Knowing that (returning goalies) Wyatt (Waselenchuk) and Riley (Hengen) are getting older we needed to get younger with our goaltending.”

Ryan softball team sweeps Dickinson

DICKINSON – The Bishop Ryan softball team won a pair of tight games against Dickinson on Tuesday in a matchup of the West Region’s top teams.

The Lions won game one 3-1 and game two 5-4.

Sophomore Hannah Stewart threw the entire first game and earned the second win in relief of junior Brieann Backes.

Senior shortstop Sam Smith led the Lions (15-1) at the plate in game one, finishing 3-for-3 with a triple. Junior catcher Maddie Lipp went 2-for-4 in each game.

Stewart relieved Backes in the fourth inning of game two with the score at 1-1 and the bases loaded. The Midgets scored all those baserunners, but Stewart shut them down the rest of the way and the Lions added four runs over the next two innings to claim the victory.

“We started out a little flat, especially offensively, but we really beared down in the second game and really fought and competed those last three innings,” Ryan coach Julie Stewart said. “We showed some real toughness coming back from being behind.”

Hannah Stewart batted 2-for-4 in game two with a double and a triple.

The Lions host Minot at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at South Hill Complex.
