Summer reading program kick-off party planned

Just because school is almost over doesn’t mean it’s time for kids to stop reading.

Lisa Klingman said her 10-year-old son, Jacob Klingman, will probably be among the kids participating in Ward County Library’s summer reading program, which will begin June 3 in a kick-off party held in conjunction with the Minot Public Library.

Lisa Klingman said the family makes a point of checking books out at the Ward County Bookmobile when it stops near Nedrose, where Jacob goes to school. Ward County Library patrons can sign up for reading program activities on the Bookmobile, at the Ward County Library or the Kenmare Public Library, a branch of the Ward County Library.

The kick-off party, which will be held June 3 at the Minot Municipal Auditorium, will feature a performance by children’s singer Conductor Jack.

Kerri Tyler, the Ward County Public Librarian, said Conductor Jack will also perform at the kick-off of the summer reading program in Kenmare at 10 a.m. June 3 in the library there.

Though they have some activities in common, Minot Public Library and Ward County Library will also hold separate reading program activities throughout the summer, with a theme of “Just Dig It @ The Library.” Children who read a minimum of 30 minutes per week at the Minot Public Library will be eligible for weekly drawings that will be held throughout the summer. Children signing up for the program will be given a reading log to keep track of the time they spend reading each week. Kids will also be given a chance to win every time they check out materials. Prizes include family passes to Roosevelt Park Zoo and various gift cards.

Tyler said kids at the Ward County Library will also be eligible to win prizes if they read for a certain number of minutes each week.

Elementary-age students can attend different summer programs throughout the summer at the Minot Public Library.

At 2 p.m., June 13, Steven Wharton from the Roosevelt Park Zoo will give gardening and composting tips. Kids can learn all about worms during a program scheduled for 2 p.m., June 20. Kids can learn about dirt during a program at 2 p.m., June 27, at the library. At 2 p.m., July 11, kids will make gnome homes. At 2 p.m., July 18, kids can learn all about dinosaurs when Alan Kihm from Minot State University gives a presentation. At 2 p.m., July 25, kids can look for buried treasure.

Tuesday movie matinees will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays in the children’s library. Science activities will be held on Wednesdays for children in grades K-5, also at 2 p.m.

Different activities will be held at the Ward County Library. At the Kenmare branch, kids can decorate cupcakes with residents of the Maple View home at 2 p.m., July 11. Tyler said there will also be a trip to the Souris Valley Wildlife Refuge sometime in July.

The summer reading program will conclude with “Super Duper Reading Fun Day” at 10 a.m., Aug. 8, at the South Hill Complex.

Kids can sign up for the summer reading program after the kick-off party.
