MOHALL Olaf Sondre Reishus, 81, Mohall, died Monday, May 20, 2013, at a Mohall nursing home.
Olaf Sondre Reishus was born Sept. 7, 1931, in a rural farm house near Hanley Falls, Minn., in Yellow Medicine County, and was named after his grandfather. He passed away on May 20th at 1:50 a.m., 12 days after suffering a stroke.
Olaf (Bud) was the son of Hans Berting (Bert) Reishus and Amanda Charlotte Grove. He lived on the family farm near Granite Falls, Minn., and attended country school until seventh grade when his family moved near Loraine. Olaf attended school in Loraine and then attended Mohall School. He began doing carpentry at age 16 and started his own construction business at age 19 where he employed his father, Bert. Reishus Construction soon grew from residential to also commercial construction, and he worked with his son Scott in the business for over 30 years.
His residential contributions included: many homes around Mohall, Sherwood, Lansford, and Westhope. His commercial contributions included: banks, churches, schools, nursing homes, fire halls, and libraries throughout northwest North Dakota, the north unit museum at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the Game Warden Museum at the International Peace Garden, the addition on the Minot Auditorium, along with Shelter and Gaming additions for the Souris Valley Humane Society.
On June 11, 1953, Olaf married Emilie Jane Feland at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minot. Together they raised seven children in Mohall. Olaf also began farming on the side in the 1960s as this was his real passion. He especially loved being in the field alongside of nature. He was very proud of the fact that he never took a government payment to support his family or farming operation. Olaf and Emilie opened Sherwood Lumber in the early 1980s. In his earlier years, Olaf was active in the Mohall Jaycees and Minot Elks Club. He also supported the Souris Valley Humane Society Shelter and the Republican Party. Olaf was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall where Reishus Construction also built an addition.
