MHS beats St. Mary’s 6-2

MANDAN – The Minot High School baseball team used a six-run fifth inning to beat No. 8 seed Bismarck St. Mary’s 6-2 in the first round of the West Region tournament Thursday.

The top-seeded Magicians (17-2) will play No. 4 Dickinson in a semifinal at 4 p.m. today. The Midgets beat No. 5 Bismarck Century 3-1 to advance.

MHS junior pitcher Demitry Zafra relieved sophomore Grant Larson in the top of the fourth inning with the Saints ahead 2-0. Both pitchers gave up two hits and struck out five batters apiece with Zafra earning the win.

“A little longer relief than what we planned on for (Zafra), but he did the job and held them in check so we could get our offense going,” MHS coach Pete Stenberg said.

Stenberg said his team (17-2) was impatient at the plate early in the game, but found its groove in the fifth inning. Larson led off with a double to center field, junior Brady Lampert was walked and Danelson brought in two runs on a single to tie the game.

The Magicians swept Dickinson in the regular season, which included a 4-3 win in the team’s region finale.
