New fishing club started in Minot
A new fishing club has formed in Minot and is seeking members. Chris Augustin is the person who has led the formation of the new club.
“Right now we’re still trying to put things together,” said Augustin. “We’re planning a couple of youth events, a fishing league, something with the Dream Catchers and maybe a banquet next winter to help raise some money. Our main mission is to improve fishing in North Dakota.”
Augustin moved to Minot from Fargo several months ago. One thing he missed was the fellowship and activities generated by a very large and active fishing club in Fargo. Augustine said he was surprised to learn that a community the size of Minot did not have a fishing club.
“I made some contacts, got other people interested and here we are,” said Augustin.
The new club is called the Nodak Anglers Association and can be found on Facebook. Although details of future club activities have yet to be finalized, Augustine says a regularly scheduled fishing league is one event under consideration.
“I hope it does catch on,” said Augustin. “Our idea is to fish different lakes with a catch photo and release.”
The first youth event hosted by the Nodak Anglers battled inclement weather. Nevertheless, about a dozen young anglers braved rainfall and cool weather to participate in a youth fishing event held at the Conservation Skills Park pond at the State Fairgrounds on May 20.
“Every kid who came got a free fishing rod. Some trout were caught,” said Augustin.
The event was originally scheduled for May 7 but had to be postponed because ice remained on the fairgrounds pond. Among other goals, the Nodak Anglers say they are interested in improving lake access and area facilities, and intend to promote conservation of the taking and releasing of fish.
