Friends salute tow truck driver

Towing companies from around the region participated Saturday in a funeral procession for Daniel Newman, 37, Minot, a tow truck operator who died in a work-related one-vehicle rollover Monday south of Minot. The funeral procession began at First Assembly of God Church and proceeded down Broadway in Minot. Newman, who was employed at Ole Olson’s Towing, was driving a 1996 Freightliner truck with an attached flatbed trailer carrying a red 2006 Dodge 3500 pick-up truck when he exited the highway while driving northbound from Parshall into Minot and his vehicle rolled over. Newman had previously owned and operated D&D Towing and Recovery and later also worked for ABC Towing before being employed at Ole Olson’s Towing. Friend and former business partner David Culp said more than 20 tow truck operators had signed up for the procession to honor Newman. Operating a tow truck is a dangerous job and people don’t always realize it, said Culp. Newman is survived by his wife, May, and three young sons.
