Florence Lillian Magnuson, 87, of Tioga, died at the Tioga Medical Center in Tioga on Saturday evening, June 8, 2013, following a short illness.
Florence was born Nov. 6, 1925, on the family farm in New Home Township, Williams County, the daughter of Arthur and Thea (Swenson) Hill. She was raised on the family farm and educated in one-room schools, attending both the Champion and New Home schools. She graduated from the eighth grade in 1939. Due to her mother’s illness when Florence was young, Florence grew into many necessary family responsibilities of raising her younger siblings as early as 1941. In 1948, Florence moved to Fargo where she studied at a beauty school.
On Oct. 29, 1949, she was united in marriage to Harold Magnuson at the Ray Lutheran Parsonage. The vows of this union grew solid and true for 63 years. Together on the Magnuson Farm in Golden Valley Township, Williams County, the couple raised their six children five boys and a daughter. In the early years, like many area farms, they raised a variety of farm animals to make a go of it. The chickens seemed to be most remembered by the kids, butchering days especially. This farm and all of its labor of love, which Florence was very much a part of, were filled with many memories, mostly good ones. In 1960, the couple moved into Tioga and established roots there and would remain proud residents of Tioga these many years. In 1995 they retired from farming and have enjoyed the fruits of their hard work. Together, Harold and Florence would travel some and often were a part of whatever Tioga had going on, or they stirred up their own fun, with a card party or get together with many friends they cultivated over the years. Never a dull moment!
She was very active in the Church at Temple and the ladies aid, later involved at Zion Lutheran in Tioga. She enjoyed a good competitive game of cards, be it bridge, pinochle or whist. Sons of Norway, they enjoyed many years as a couple and later the Tioga Senior Citizens and all of its activities. Florence was an excellent cook and baker and enjoyed entertaining. She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa sorority for many years.
She is survived by: her husband, Harold; five sons and a daughter and their families, Gary and Rhae Jean, of Anthem, Ariz., Arlyn and Leah, of Gillette, Wyo., David, of Weston, Wyo., Kevin and (Leslie) of Gillette, Rick (Lori) and family of Gillette, and Linda (Gary) Knudsvig, of Williston; grandchildren, Nicole, Michael, Lindsay, Jennifer, Stacy, Tyler, Aaron and Amy; stepgrandchildren, Dustin, Nickole, Angie, Tiffany, Melanie, Sherry; 28 great-grandchildren; sister, Delores Grimson; brother, Alvin Hill Sr. (Pat); and a brother-in-law, Raymond Magnuson, of Tioga.
