Minot airman dies in canoe mishap

LAKE METIGOSHE A Minot Air Force Base airman, Tech Sgt. Jason Mower, died in a canoeing accident that occurred on the State Park side of Lake Metigoshe about 7 p.m. Saturday. Mower and another airman were in the canoe when it overturned in windy conditions. Neither man was wearing a life jacket.

According to reports, both men were seen on the surface by the operator of a pontoon that went to the scene. By the time the pontoon arrived at the location Mower had slipped under the water and was not seen again. The other occupant of the canoe was safely pulled aboard the pontoon. Mower’s body was recovered at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to the Bottineau County Sheriff’s Office, no other watercraft were involved in the incident. Both men were part of a larger group of Minot AFB personnel who were camped at Lake Metigoshe State Park.

Agencies responding included the Border Patrol, Bottineau County Sheriff’s Office, Bottineau Ambulance, Fire Department and Dive Rescue; Lake Metigoshe Fire Department, North Dakota Game and Fish Department and Sherwood Fire Department Dive Rescue.
