Stanley native Dolezal wins U.S. title

DES MOINES, Iowa – Stanley native Riley Dolezal had the performance of his career on Sunday.

Dolezal, seeded 14th, won the javelin throw at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a personal best of 83.50 meters (273 feet, 11 inches).

Dolezal beat his previous best by more than 30 feet. Riley’s throw not only earned him a gold medal, but he matched the world standard to ensure a spot at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in August in Moscow.

The 2009 North Dakota State University graduate competed in last year’s Olympic Trials, but did not advance to the finals.

Fellow area athlete Sierra Rosenau, a rising sophomore at NDSU, took ninth in the junior women’s javelin on Friday. The Carrington native had a top throw of 43.09 (141-4), but fell one place out of a spot in the finals.

Fargo South graduate and Oregon University runner Laura Roesler ran a personal best of 2 minutes, 0.23 seconds to finish fifth in the senior women’s 800-meter run Sunday.
