Hornberger to compete at National Rodeo
BERTHOLD North Dakota High School Rodeo Queen Hannah Hornberger will be competing in the National High School Rodeo competition July 10-21 in Rock Springs, Wyo.
“Ever since I could remember, I’ve been riding horse,” said Hornberger, who will be a senior this fall at Lewis and Clark-Berthold High School.
For the National Rodeo Queen competition, she will compete in horsemanship, but also be required to give a speech, go through an interview, answer an improptu question and take a written exam.
She said she was shocked when she won the state competition, which was held in Bowman June 13-16, and is looking forward to going on to the nationals.
“It’s very exciting,” she said.
Hornberger said she loves rodeo because it’s a family sport and everyone is there to cheer each other on, unlike other sports that are more competitive.
“Everybody helps everybody else,” she said.
High school rodeo has a fall and a spring season, as well as a summer session.
She practices with the horses several times a week, taking them on three to four mile horseback rides and practicing dummy roping. She switches between horses for different events. She specializes in roping, she said.
