Elwood died at the Tioga Medical Center on Monday evening, June 24, 2013.
Elwood was born June 30, 1940, at Noonan, to Ben and Annie (Barmoen) Thompson. He spent his childhood days growing up on their farm north of Battleview. After attending the Powers Lake Public School, he joined the Navy and served from 1962 to 1965. He was stationed at Treasure Island in Oakland, Calif., and his ship assignment was the USS Tracer until he was discharged.
On July 30, 1963, Elwood was united in marriage to Diana Nissen from Battleview, in Las Vegas, Nev. They were blessed with five children. In 1965 he worked for Roustabout Service in Tioga for one year before being employed by Amerada Hess Corp., where he worked for 34 years before retiring in 1999.
Elwood enjoyed time with the family, going for drives in the country and visiting friends and family. He enjoyed working in his yard, babysitting his grandkids and following Brady’s high school sports and keeping an eye on the goings on at the family farm. He was a quiet man but he was quick-witted and had a wonderful sense of humor that always made his friends laugh. He and Diana enjoyed the times they spent traveling and visiting friends and family. In his later years, he took up painting with many enjoyable hours spent mastering this skill.
Elwood is survived by: his wife, Diana; daughters, Carrie Lynn Thompson, Williston, Angela (Cameron) Holte, Betty (Danial) Floyd, and son, John Thompson, all of Tioga, and son Benjamin (Lisa) Thompson, from Travis Air Force Base in Sacramento, Calif.; grandsons, Brady Thompson, Tyler Thompson, Connor Holte, Mattheau Thompson and granddaughter, Bailey Thompson, brothers, Duane (Carol ) Thompson, from Kelso, Wash., Benny Thompson and Curtis Thompson from Battleview, and sister, Dorothy Mrochinski, from Battleview; his mother-in-law, Wanda Nissen; and a tag-along friend of the kids who always called Elwood Dad, Lisa Holmen.
