Longfellow portables on the move

Longfellow Elementary is one step closer to being ready for the start of classes this fall.

Portable classrooms the Minot school district had rented for use at the flood-damaged school were removed this week and were taken to a staging area at Jefferson Early Childhood Center, where they will be removed by their owner. The district had rented the portables, each of which had eight classrooms, for use at Longfellow. The damaged school has been renovated and an addition was built at the school, which will be open in time for fall classes.

Supt. Mark Vollmer said no decision has been made about the temporary building, an all-purpose facility, put up outside Longfellow following the flood. The district is still negotiating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has said the district would need to pay the cost of the building’s construction if it were to purchase it. Vollmer said the district has never made an official offer on the building, but it would be a shame to see it torn down. More will be known following the close out process with FEMA, said Vollmer.
