Kelly J. Bloms, 50, Surrey, passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, at his sister’s farm near Lansford, from melanoma skin cancer diagnosed in late March of 2013.
Kelly Joseph Bloms was born Oct. 14, 1962, the son of Clarence and Anita (Engelhard) Bloms, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Minot. He was raised on the Bloms family farm near Lansford and graduated from Lansford High School in 1980.
Following his high school graduation, Kelly attended the University of North Dakota-Williston. He then went custom combining with his brother, Mitch, for a time, and worked for area farmers. In 1982, he moved to Faribault, Minn., where he worked at Heirloom Enterprises in Dundas, Minn., as shipping manager of wood and brass products.
In 1990, Kelly moved back to Minot, where he worked for the city of Minot. In 1994, Kelly bought a house in Surrey. Kelly’s dad, Clarence, was a carpenter in the winter months and Kelly followed in his footsteps. He worked as a carpenter for several Minot companies and was a self-employed carpenter for many years. He worked with fellow carpenter and nephew, Pat Cunningham, and they enjoyed hunting and fishing in between working. He was a regular at Porter Brothers with scrap metal.
During harvest season, he helped his brother, Jerry, on the home farm, preferring to haul the grain. Kelly continued to reside in Surrey until this last month, when he moved into his sister Lynnette’s house near Lansford, where she cared for him as his health declined.
Kelly loved the outdoors. Kelly was a familiar site “bombing” around the countryside in his old pickups. He enjoyed the entire hunting season from the opening of mourning doves, through upland game, geese and ducks and all the way through to the end of deer season. Pick Stevens especially enjoyed having Kelly help control his deer population. Kelly preferred wild game and processed his own meat. He was very self-sufficient.
Kelly enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors, collecting all sorts of items from many places, and he wasn’t allowed to tread on cousin Keith’s territory. He was always willing to help anyone at any time and was known for his generosity to all his friends. He had a great personality, sense of humor and a spirit that will be missed by all.
Special people in his life who were like daughters to him included Ashley Rahn and Charity Daily.
Those who shared in his life: sisters and brothers-in-law, Lynnette (Glen) Cunningham, Lansford, Eileen (Curt) Schacher, Wilmington, N.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry (Joyce) Bloms, Minot, and Mitchell Bloms, Fargo; nieces and nephews, Sheila Leshovsky, Joe Cunningham, Sara Corrick and Pat Cunningham, Jennifer and Ryan Schacher, Megan Budke, Rachel Failing, Sonya, Brian and Jake Bloms; and several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
