Genevieve (Woessner) Lyson, Bismarck, passed away July 17, 2013, at age 85, at a Bismarck care center. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 20, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., on Friday, July 19, at Bismarck Funeral Home, Bismarck.
Genevieve was born May 30, 1928, in Palermo, the daughter of the late Herman and Christine (Jacobson) Woessner. She was raised in a small farming community around Belden and graduated from Stanley High School in 1946.
For 19 years, Genevieve was active in 4-H as a member and leader. She won a trip to Washington, D.C., in 1941 for her outstanding work in 4-H. She played piano in Belden Church from 1941-1943. She also taught Sunday school and was principal at Parshall.
Genevieve taught elementary school for 28 years in Mountrail, Burke and Burleigh counties. When she moved to Bismarck she taught and was principal in several schools in the Bismarck area including Baldwin and Apple Creek School. She retired from teaching in 1988.
Genevieve graduated from Minot State Teachers College with a two-year elementary teacher’s degree in 1961, and from the University of Mary College, Bismarck, in 1971 with a bachelor of science degree.
Genevieve was active in the American Legion, Eagles, and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries. She played the piano for the Eagles ritual team for many years and was a state musician for one year. She later joined the English Singers at the Senior Center and substituted as a water aerobics instructor for the YMCA.
Genevieve married Harlan Lyson on Oct. 22, 1949, in Stanley. Harlan and Genevieve had three children. The family lived in Parshall for 13 years and then moved to Bismarck in 1963.
Genevieve was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Bismarck. She enjoyed music, reading, yarn crocheting, crafts, water aerobics, swimming and her grandchildren.
She is survived by: her sons and daughters-in-law, Larry (Karen) Lyson and Hal (Paulette) Lyson, all of Bismarck; her daughter, Cheryl Lyson, Billings Mont.; her brother, Kenneth (Darlene) Woessner; sisters, Lucille Ofsthun and Ione (Johnnie) Locken; sister-in-law, Delores Woessner; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Harlan Lyson and her brother, Donald Woessner.
Donations made in her memory may be sent to Missouri Slope Care Center Activities or Lord of Life Lutheran Church, both Bismarck.
