New in the neighborhood
Minot residents who are delighted to finally have a Gordmans in town can pat themselves on the back because they are a big reason the national retailer chose to come here.
The company held a grand opening ceremony Friday morning at its new store in Southgate Crossing. Jeff Gordman, president and CEO of Gordmans, said his company’s mission is to delight its guests. It was Gordmans that was delighted, however, when Minot residents started writing in to request a store in the Magic City.
“This started several years ago, and apparently was started by one very passionate guest who got all of her friends to submit the same request, which was, ‘We really want you in Minot’ for a variety of different reasons,” Gordman said. “And they all ended with, ‘Why not Minot?’ And I am so ecstatic that we listened to our guests and decided to locate in Minot.”
Minot is the third Gordmans location in North Dakota, following Fargo and Grand Forks. Gordman said the company plans to open a fourth store in Bismarck next year.
Gordman said they have had an amazing reception from the Minot community since their soft open around 10 days ago, and he wants to return that hospitality.
“At Gordmans we want our guests to feel welcome when they enter our store and know that we sincerely appreciate the fact that you’ve chosen to give us your business,” Gordman said. “We also want our guests to have fun while they’re discovering our incredible savings and name brands, and our amazing selection of merchandise.”
The store is 50,000 square feet, which Gordman said is their typical size.
Items Gordmans carries include name brand apparel for all ages, footwear, handbags, fragrances, accessories, wall art, accent furniture, tabletop decor, floral and garden, candles, toys and more. Gordman said although their stores represent an everyday-value proposition, they present like a specialty store, department store or even a boutique by using contemporary fixtures, signing and graphics. However, the heart of Gordmans remains the merchandise and pricing.
“It all starts with an amazing selection of merchandise, and we sell it all at up to 60 percent off regular prices found in department stores and specialty stores every day,” Gordman said. “So we’re really trying to optimize savings, selection and then the shopping experience concurrently, hopefully in a way that sets us apart.”
To help customers feel as comfortable as possible, there is Gordmans Giggles for children and Gordmans Grandstand for guys. Gordmans Giggles is a children’s theater that offers the little ones a place to sit while they watch cartoons. Gordmans Grandstand is the same principle for guys, offering a sports television viewing area.
In addition to helping its customers, Gordmans is also helping the Minot community through its Partners in Education initiative. Gordman presented Minot Public Schools superintendent Mark Vollmer with a check for $2,500, which was raised during a two-week fundraiser. Customers can help out by purchasing “helping hands” for $1 each, with all proceeds going to Minot Public Schools. In addition, Gordmans has adopted Perkett Elementary as its partner school in Minot.
“Perkett has many needs,” Vollmer said. “Perkett is excited to be the adopted school by the Gordmans family, and we are excited to see this wonderful store opportunity for the area shoppers here in Minot.”
It was the enthusiasm of Minot shoppers that brought Gordmans to the Magic City, an enthusiasm that is definitely shared by Gordman himself.
“We’re so ecstatic to be here in Minot,” Gordman said. “We’re so ecstatic about being in North Dakota in general.”
