Philip Joel Haakenson
Philip Joel Haakenson, 64, of Fort Ann, N.Y., formerly of Maxbass, passed away Monday, July 22, 2012, after a six-year battle with a debilitating disease.
Phil was born Aug. 2, 1948, to the late Melvin and Esther Haakenson, and grew up on the family farm near Maxbass, N.D. He graduated from Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls, Minn., in 1966. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1971. One tour of duty was in Vietnam.
He is survived by: his wife, Linda; sons, Scott, Kevin and Josh; daughters, Sarah and Sherry; daughters-in-law, Beth and Sarah; grandchildren, Andre, Caleb, Ryan, Arionna, Payton, Alissa and Delaney; along with countless other friends and family who were blessed to know him; and he is also survived by six siblings, Ethel Thompson, and John, Bob, Dave, Mary and Dan Haakenson.
Phil enjoyed a career as a building contractor and especially enjoyed doing stonework and taking on building projects that demanded some creativity. He loved woodworking, singing, gardening and spending time with his family. He went on seven mission trips to Brazil, where he built churches and dug wells. His family will remember him as a generous and loving person who was always willing to help anyone in need. Phil touched the lives of many people with his generosity and his trademark sense of humor.
Services have been held at Kingsbury Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hudson Falls, N.Y., and at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Memorial service: Will be held Aug. 8, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the English Lutheran Church in Maxbass, N.D.
Burial: Will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Maxbass.
Memorials: Requested to Sunnydale Academy Missions Fund.
