Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Michaelson

Rudolph “Rudy” Michaelson, 86, Velva, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, in a Velva nursing home.

Rudolph Norman Michaelson was born on Jan. 27, 1927, a son of Benjamin and Lillian (Feige) Michaelson, in Brown Township, near Velva. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school near Voltaire.

Rudy farmed with his brother, Chester, for several years, raising small grains and livestock. He retired from farming in 1991. He remained on the farm until 1997, when he moved into Velva.

He enjoyed playing pinochle, bingo, watching the Minnesota Twins, attending church activities and being a caregiver to anyone in need.

Rudy was a member of the St. Cecelia Catholic Church of Velva, Velva Knights of Columbus and the Velva Senior Citizens.

Those who shared in his life: sister, Grace Durgin, Reedsport, Ore.; nieces and nephews, Leora Bailey, Springfield, Ore., Vern Durgin, Reedsport, Ore., Russel Durgin, Reno, Nev., Eugene Gackle, Minot, Renee Ballou, Lincoln, Neb., Gerard Gackle, Sun City West, Ariz., David Gackle, Helena, Mont., Rebecca Gackle, Grand Forks, Mary Anderson, Bismarck, Robert Gackle, Velva, Suzanne Watne, Minot, Mark Gackle, Prior Lake, Minn., Curtis Michaelson, Beulah, David Michaelson, Dickinson, Tim Michaelson, Enderlin, Charles Michaelson, Williston, Barbara Bickler, Sun City West, Ariz., Teresa Barone, Mandan, Patty Michaelson, Minot, Michele Michaelson, Bismarck, Karla Michaelson, Carrington, Monica Effertz, Velva, and Diane Michaelson, Savage, Minn.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Rudy was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Chester and Eunice Michaelson; sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Gene Gackle, brother-in-law, Fay Durgin, nephew, Paul Michaelson, niece Mary Hopperstad; and a great-nephew, Benjamin Michaelson

Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Velva.

Burial: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva.

Memorials: May be given to the Paul Michaelson Scholarship or the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation: Today, Aug. 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Velva.

Vigil prayer service: Today at 5 p.m. in St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Velva.
