Helen Mikkelson, 89, Garrison, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at a Garrison hospital surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Garrison. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Minot at 1 p.m.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Helen Mae Mikkelson was born Feb. 5, 1924, to Vincent and Mary (Spindler) Kubicek on the family farm in Blackwater Township near Garrison. She attended O’Shea School No. 2, graduating eighth grade in 1937. Helen then stayed home to help on the family farm.
On Jan. 2, 1937, Helen married Lawrence Mikkelson at Washburn. They lived in various places until settling in Garrison with their family of six children. Helen began working in the laundry department of Garrison Memorial Hospital, where she worked for 12 years. Because of health problems, Helen moved into the third floor at Garrison Memorial Hospital in 2004.
Helen enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, crocheting, sewing, playing cards and spending time with family.
Helen is survived by her sons, Larry (Diane) Mikkelson, Gary (Bev) Mikkelson, Randy (Connie) Mikkelson, all of Garrison; daughters, Linda Schlenker, Hazen; Karen (John) Eisen, Cheyenne, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Angie Christopherson, Minot, Rosie Proell, Garrison; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence; daughter, Kay Frances; sisters, Dorothy Bruhn, Frances Kurtz, and Elbina Hopkins.
