Alfred Isakson, 93, Minot, formerly of Upham, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at Trinity Nursing Home in Minot.
Alfred Isak Isakson was born July 25, 1920, in the Upham area, the son of Olaf and Ella (Nelson) Isakson. Alfred was reared and educated in Layton Township where he helped on the family farm and worked for numerous neighbors before he entered the Army.
Alfred enlisted in the Army in July 1942, serving with the 96th Infantry Division “E” Company Weapons Platoon during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific, the Philippine Islands, and Okinawa where he was in charge of a mortar squad and then became platoon sergeant. Alfred received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Rifleman Badge, Good Conduct Medal and several other ribbons. He was honorably discharged in January 1946.
Alfred moved back to the Upham area where he continued farming and raising cattle. On April 5, 1947, Alfred was united in marriage to Viola Wager in Fargo. The couple made their home in the Upham area. Alfred served on the Little Deep Township Board, the Little Deep Township School Board, and drove bus for the Upham school district for many years. They continued to live on the farm for 50 years before moving to Minot. Alfred enjoyed raising cattle and had a special love for horses.
Viola passed away on October 27, 2001.
Alfred was a member of the Nermoe American Legion Post #169 of Upham, and the Disabled American Veterans. For numerous years Alfred and Viola attended the annual 96th Army Division Company Reunion and Company “E” reunions.
Surviving family includes: son, Dennis (Lolita) Isakson, Upham; daughters, Diane (Craig) Thompson, Portland, Ore., Rita Isakson (Stan Derheim), Minot; grandchildren, Tammy (Scott) Birdzell, Shawn (Deb) Thompson, Blaine (Angie) Isakson, Deann Isakson and Isaac Isakson; step-grandchildren, Kirk and Jolita (LJ) Bennett; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hannah, McKenna, Kaitlyn, Karly, Kelsey, Kendra, Kiara, Kimm, Abrianna, Trey, Kayleigh and Kierra; sisters, Minnie Gwiazdzinkski and Doris Allen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Viola; brother, Oscar; sisters, Florence Isakson, Anna Thompson, Viola Norris and Sophie Coyle.
Funeral: Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.
Visitation: Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home.
