Carl W. Garbe

Carl Garbe, 94, Minot, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at his daughter’s residence in Fargo.

Carl William Garbe was born June 27, 1919, at Kramer, the son of William and Sylvia (Trattles) Garbe. He was raised and educated at Newburg and moved with his family to Bottineau in 1933. During his younger years he was employed at the Bottineau Creamery.

In 1939, he volunteered with the North Dakota Army National Guard and entered into active duty service with the 164th Army Infantry during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater of the war until receiving his honorable discharge in 1946.

Carl was united in marriage to Eldora Larson on June 25, 1947, in Saskatchewan. They made their home in Bottineau, where he continued his work with the creamery. They moved to Minot in 1950, where he worked for George Maragos at the Cut Rate Grocery#3 for 17 years, prior to working at Trinity Hospital as the housekeeping manager for several years. He retired in 1984. Eldora died Jan. 15, 2006.

Carl enjoyed spending time at their lake home at Metigoshe throughout the years. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, where he volunteered in a number of capacities. He was also a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.

His family includes: children, Karen Hickerson and friend, Todd Griffith, Minneapolis, Lori Garbe, Fargo; son-in-law, Gary Thuner, Minot; and daughter-in-law, Brenda Garbe, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Marlene Thuner; son, Brian; sisters, Rachel and Elvera; and a brother, Raymond.

Funeral service: Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at 2 p.m. in Christ Lutheran Church, Minot.

Interment: Veterans Section of Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m., in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
