Donna Springan

Donna Mae Springan, 84, of Stanley, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, in the Stanley hospital. Her funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at 2 p.m. at American Lutheran Church, Stanley. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Stanley. Visitation is today, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, in Springan Funeral Home, Stanley.

Donna was born July 3, 1929, to Harold and Alma (Stensrud) Hendrickson, in Montevideo, Minn. She was raised on the family farm and attended country school for grades 1-8. She graduated from Montevideo High School in 1946. Donna worked at a drug store in Montevideo before attending St. Olaf College.

In June 1950, Donna came to Stanley and was the parish worker at the Evangelical Lutheran Church. She met Rolf Springan, fell in love and they were married April 5, 1953. She worked at Scandia American Bank in Stanley before becoming a full-time wife, mother and homemaker. Donna and Rolf worked side by side as wonderful partners in the family business. She continued to work there until June of this year. Rolf passed away in 2005. Donna lived in the family home until 2012, when she moved into Prairie View Terrace apartments in Stanley.

An active member of the American Lutheran Church in Stanley, she served on the church council and as president of the WELCA group. She was involved in Bible studies, Naomi Circle, ladies’ quilting group and was instrumental in starting the prayer shawl ministry at the church.

Donna served on the hospital auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed the activities with her Red Hat group and looked forward to Fridays at the Golden Age Club. She treasured all her many friends who made her life so complete.

Her kids and grandkids were the light of her life. Many hours were spent making afghans, quilts, baby blankets, dish towels, favorite baked goodies and meals. She loved spending time with them and supporting them in their many activities.

Donna is survived by; her children, Steve (Cathy) Springan, of Stanley, Joel Springan, Bismarck, Judy (Lane) Lee, Minot, and Jana (Mike) Abel, Bismarck; grandchildren, Sara (Andrew) Herr, Gregg Springan, Haleigh Springan, Ben Lee, Sam Lee, Johanna Lee, Nick Lee, Allison Abel and Mariah Abel; brother, Lyle (Barb) Hendrickson, Rapid City, S.D.; sisters, Lila Nevins, of Dawson, Minn., and Phyllis Stevens, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Anna Marie (Bill) Whitmore, of Stanley, Irene Springan, Bismarck, and Edna Frostad, Auburn, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Rolf.
