Alma Walker, 89, Garrison, triumphantly entered the gates of heaven on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Garrison Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. Burial will be held in Garrison at 5:30 p.m. There will be a visitation and a time to share stories today (Monday) from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison. There will also be viewing time from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran on Tuesday.
Alma Walker was born Sept. 17, 1923, to Wilhelm and Emilia (Wohlgemuth) Delzer on a farm near Benedict. Alma was raised and educated in country schools near Benedict and assisted on the family farm after her education.
She married Gerhard Korstad on June 17, 1942, in Garrison. They made their home on a farm near Emmet with their children until 1960. From 1960 to 1967, they owned and operated the Emmet General Store. During this time she also worked as a postal clerk and postmaster at the Emmet Post Office. After her husband died in 1967, Alma moved to Minot and worked as a postal clerk at the Minot Post Office retiring after serving in that field for 24 years. She married Robert Walker on March 9, 1980, in Las Vegas, Nev. Together they were members of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Eagles Aerie, NARVE, VFW and the Elks Lodge, all in Minot. After Robert’s death in 2006, she remained at her home in Minot until 2009, when she moved to the third floor of Garrison Memorial Hospital due to health problems.
Alma enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband Robert, baking (especially doughnuts and Walker buns), crocheting, sewing, making and decorating wedding cakes, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Alma is survived by: her sons, Gene (Barb) Korstad, Casselton, Jerry (Ann) Walker, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Steve (Cindy) Walker, Tampa, Fla.; daughters, Carol (Jim) Wyne, Garrison, Susan (Jim) Struckness, Hanover, Minn., and Sandy (Dave) Kenyon, Colorado Springs; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister Helen Hellem, Garrison; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husbands, Gerhard and Robert; sons, Gary Korstad and James Walker; brothers, Ernest, Adolph and Emil Delzer; brothers-in-law, Emmanuel Steinert, Kenneth Fitzsimonds and Vern Hellem; sister, Pauline Steinert; and sisters-in-law, Pauline Delzer and Edna Delzer.
Memorials can be made to the Trinity Cancer Center, Minot, or to the donor’s choice.
