Federal funds for state airports

In light of increased usage largely related to Bakken oil activity, senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp and Rep. Kevin Cramer announced Wednesday that airports across North Dakota have been awarded Federal Aviation Administration grants totaling more than $17.5 million. Minot International Airport is among the recipients, with $6.5 million.

Awarded by the Department of Transportation with funds appropriated by Congress, the money will go toward infrastructural improvements such as expanding runways and repairing tarmac. In Minot’s case, the grant will allow construction on its new terminal to begin immediately.

Dickinson-Theodore Roosevelt Regional Airport will receive almost $1.7 million for expansion, plus $200,000 to update the existing master plan to identify future airport needs. Watford City Municipal Airport will receive $150,000; Tioga Municipal Airport Authority $300,000; and Bismarck Municipal Airport $2.3 million.
