Ruth Watland, 86, Minot, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, in a Minot nursing home.
Ruth Alice Bakken was born in Minot on June 29, 1927, a daughter of Andrew and Netta (Amlien) Bakken. She was raised on her family’s farm and attended a one-room grade school in Willis Township. She completed her high school degree at Minot High School while boarding with families in town, and completed one year at Minot State Teachers College while working at the medical lab of Northwest Clinic.
Ruth was united in marriage to Harry Watland on Sept. 25, 1952, at Saron Lutheran Church on South Prairie, rural Minot. They made their home first in Minot while Harry taught farm management at the college for war veterans, and then moved to the Bakken family farm in Willis Township in 1953. Ruth was involved in all aspects of farm life, was known for her baked goods as a homemaker, and raised four children there until the family moved to Sawyer in 1973. She was very active with the Ladies Aid and Sunday school at Saron Lutheran Church, Ward County 4-H as a leader of the Lucky Lassies Club, and many activities supporting the Sawyer School including Music Mothers, countless school dinners, programs and fundraising activities.
After her kids all left for college, she began doing cleaning services for businesses in Minot, and started her own cleaning business for medical offices. Harry passed away on Jan. 27, 1991. Following his death, Ruth continued her cleaning business until retiring at age 73 and moving to Minot in 2003. She then devoted her time to her gardens, and baking her cakes and Norwegian goodies for visits by her kids and grandkids. Ruth joyfully shared advice from her long-time physician, Dr. Teri Hurly, about improving her diet and exercise as she began regularly walking 6 to 9 mile routes around Oak Park and northwest Minot most every day except Sundays until slowing down at age 83. She was also a regular visitor to two brothers and two sisters as they spent their final years at Trinity Homes.
Ruth is survived by: her children, George (Alice) Watland, LaVonne (Donald) Wohl, Daniel (Gayle) Watland and Marilyn (Tim) Wright; her grandchildren, Sarah (Brian) McCarthy, Rachael (Ryan) Meyer, Zachary (Rebecka) Wohl, Erin Wohl, Kelsey (Justine) Wohl, Dustin Wohl, Bjorn (Jeannette) Watland, Megan (Chris) Schommer, Ezra Watland, Jessica Wright and Molly Wright; and her great-grandchildren, Maja McCarthy, Calla McCarthy and Rylee Wohl. She is survived by a sister, Ilene Yost, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins in the U.S. and Norway.
